"I am living in my calling" - Alyssa Root
Alyssa Root - Longview, WA
Alyssa Root is no stranger to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). Now in her second year on staff in Longview, Washington, her presence is having a profound impact on coaches and athletes in her community.
After losing her father at a young age, Alyssa struggled to find her identity. She grew up in a Christian home and had a solid foundation, but poured herself into sports to fill the gap in her life. She was first introduced to FCA in high school through her track coach, Coach K. She gave her heart to Jesus as a freshman at an FCA camp in Estes Park, Colorado and served as an FCA student leader all four years of high school.
Coach K continued to follow-up with Alyssa as she left home to play basketball in college. In these years, Alyssa struggled with her faith, with drinking and partying and was desperate to fill the hole in her heart. Lost and unsure where to turn, she once again called Coach K. “I’m a wreck, and I need Jesus,” she shared over coffee, and that conversation was the catalyst that turned her life around. In the following years, she surrendered her life to Jesus, got baptized, finished school to be a physical therapist, and eventually felt a tug on her heart to get involved with FCA again.
Alyssa met with Kane Ulrich, FCA Area Director in Cowlitz County with an interest in becoming a volunteer, and he boldly shared a job opportunity. After a few interviews, the Lord spoke clearly to Alyssa that this is what He was calling her to – using her story, leadership and influence to disciple coaches and athletes. “It was so fun to call Coach K and thank her for her influence in my life. Her investment in me is creating a ripple effect in the lives of the coaches and athletes I get to work with.”
In less than one year, God is using Alyssa to mobilize 14 adult volunteers on 14 school campuses, reaching more than 250 young athletes through weekly Huddles in Cowlitz County – all because Coach K and countless donors said “yes” to the endless power of discipleship.
Your gift multiplies through the investment of FCA, creating opportunities for staff to activate in their communities – to make disciples that make disciples. Where coaches and athletes are, that’s where FCA wants to be also. Engaging relationally, equipping spiritually, and sending out empowered disciples like Alyssa in Longview, Washington and to every corner of this region.
As you make plans for your year-end giving, would you prayerfully consider making a gift to FCA? We can’t do this work without you.
Thank you,
Ryan Johnston
