If you’re reading this and you find yourself overwhelmed by depression or anxiety, you’re not alone.
Rates of mental unhealth
have never been higher.
You’re also not without hope.
Depression and anxiety are the cruelest captors–often leaving one feeling stuck, abandoned, and imprisoned in their own mind. But
Jesus offers freedom!
John 8:36 says, “If the Son [Jesus] sets you free, you really will be free.”
When Jesus said this to the group of Jews he was teaching, many were angry and confused, because they were so used to finding their identity in their religious and ethnic identity. They also didn’t think they were enslaved, so why was Jesus telling them they could be freed? This was an exceptionally countercultural message–Jesus was referring to spiritual freedom!
This same promise is extended to you if you know Jesus as Savior. You’re offered freedom from sin, from a life without purpose, and–the hope so many of us are desperate for–from anxiety and depression.
Freedom from mental unhealth means your identity is not in depression or anxiety, even though it so often feels like nothing else is true about you.
But what does that freedom look like? And how do you experience it in the face of crippling anxiety and depression?
For example, fear serves a purpose–it’s one of the ways your mind and body try to protect you from impending danger. When you’re afraid, your brain goes into survival mode (fight, flight, or freeze). But for the Christian, fear and faith can’t live harmoniously.
The next time you feel yourself become trapped or bullied by fear, insecurity, panic, or sadness, allow yourself to feel the emotion completely, then remind your heart of truth, and
take that thought captive. If your inner world is speaking lies about who you are or who God is, then those thoughts are from the devil and not from the Holy Spirit. Tell the lie to take a hike. The party is over.
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”
Galatians 5:1
You can’t experience freedom alone. First and foremost, you need the work of the Spirit to unleash his peace and joy, and secondly, you need people to pour into you and pick you up off the floor.
If you’re a Christian,
you have a new identity. Part of that identity includes 24/7 access to the power, peace, and comfort of the Holy Spirit. Use it!
The other part of that identity is belonging to the family of God, which means you have people who love you and will cry with you (Romans 12:15).
One of the best things about being in a safe, intimate, committed relationship with someone is the freedom that comes from being deeply seen and known. There comes a point where you’re no longer concerned with what the other person thinks about you, and you start to feel emboldened to be honest about your thoughts and feelings.
We are offered this same freedom in our relationship with Father God. He sees and knows our hearts better than anyone ever will, yet for some reason we tend to hold back in our communication with him. We pray eloquent prayers when on the inside, we’re struggling or angry or low.
Freedom in Christ means you are
free to be you–sad, scared, angry, depressed, anxious, or whatever!
But freedom in Christ also means you don’t have to stay there.
Maybe that means screaming into a pillow and telling the Lord
exactly
what is painful. Maybe it’s imagining yourself in the arms of Jesus, sobbing into his shoulder… or maybe you’re pounding on the chest of the Father, throwing a tantrum. Maybe freedom looks like journaling out every detail of your lost dream and asking God for faith to see that he’s still good.
The point is:
you are free to be a child of God. The book of Psalms is a noteworthy example of a godly man being brutally honest with God, and experiencing healing and hope in return.
You don’t have to walk the road of anxiety and depression alone. You can be
freed from the chains of mental unhealthiness! Come join our community of student athletes seeking to follow Jesus wholeheartedly. We’d love to
connect with you.
