In every athlete's journey, there are moments that go beyond the game—moments where faith, identity, and purpose come into focus. For Kobe, a coach and athlete from the Pacific Northwest, those moments have led him to a deeper calling: the call to discipleship.
Kobe’s story, as captured in his own words, is one of transformation. Growing up, like many athletes, he found much of his identity in sports. Wins and losses, performance, and competition were central to his life. But there came a point where Kobe realized that while sports could fuel his passion, they couldn’t fulfill the deeper longing in his heart for something more meaningful. It was through Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) that Kobe began to understand his true purpose—becoming not just a better athlete but a disciple of Christ, committed to making disciples in the lives of those he coached and competed alongside.
Through his involvement with FCA, Kobe found a community that walked alongside him as he sought to align his life with his faith. It wasn't just about being an excellent competitor anymore; it was about how he could use his platform to impact others for Jesus.
For Kobe, discipleship became a natural extension of his life in sports. He began to realize that his true identity wasn’t rooted in his achievements or his performance on the field, but in his relationship with Christ. He started mentoring athletes, sharing his story, and encouraging them to find their own purpose in God. This shift—from focusing on wins and losses to focusing on the eternal impact of discipleship—has not only transformed Kobe but also the athletes and coaches he interacts with.
Now, Kobe is committed to walking alongside the next generation of athletes, helping them discover their faith in Christ and teaching them how to live it out both in competition and in everyday life. His passion is contagious, and his dedication to living out the Great Commission—to make disciples—is changing lives one relationship at a time. We are thankful that he served at our first ever Greater Seattle Multi-Sport Camp and Greater Portland's Middle School Leadership Camp as a Huddle Leader.
Kobe’s journey is a powerful reminder that sports can be a platform for discipleship. FCA’s mission of engaging, equipping, and empowering coaches and athletes to be disciple-makers is central to everything we do. It’s about transforming competitors into Christ-followers who then go out and disciple others.
Kobe’s life is a testimony to the power of one disciple making disciples. He is using his influence to help others grow in their faith, and his story shows just how impactful this ministry can be. But we need more coaches and athletes like Kobe—people who are willing to invest their lives in the discipleship process, helping others know Christ and make Him known.
As we look toward the future, we’re asking you to partner with us in this life-changing work. FCA Pacific Northwest is committed to reaching more athletes and coaches with the Gospel, but we can’t do it alone. Your financial support allows us to continue investing in the lives of leaders like Kobe who are dedicated to making disciples in their communities.
Will you help us expand our reach? When you give, you are not just supporting sports ministry—you are investing in a movement of disciples who are committed to making disciples. Visit pnwfca.org to learn more about how you can partner with us and support this vital mission.
